Stop Revenge Evictions

Shelter estimates that 200,000 private tenants a year face ‘revenge evictions’.  On Monday I was at a demo outside parliament organised by the GMB union in support of a private members bill introduced by Sarah Teather MP calling for greater protection for private tenants against landlords who try to evict them when they demand repairs to which they are legally entitled.  Details of the bill are here.

Despite all being invited, only two MPs managed to cross the road and join the GMB protest – Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell.  Both emphasised that it’s vital there are enough MPs in parliament this Friday (28th) to ensure the bill gets a chance of progressing.  I’ve written to my MP, Rushanara Ali, requesting that she is there to support the bill.  If you haven’t done so already, please ask your MP to do the same.  Unaffordable, insecure, poor quality private renting is a direct consequence of the housing crisis and failure to build council homes.  Reform of the private rented sector is Labour Party policy.
